Barbarians are a neutral unit which is first encountered during the tutorial, shortly after the city is founded. They can be found throughout the kingdom and will never attack armies or cities unless they are attacked first. Barbarians also live in Barbarian Forts.
Attacking barbarians will cost 50 action points. This amount is reduced by 2 action points each time barbarians are attacked without the commander returning to the city (these may be reduced even further, by up to 10 action points, if the leading commander has the 'Insight' talent). Barbarians will also attack you if they are hit by an active skill of your commander in a battle closeby; this way no action points will be spent.
Killing barbarians will reward a set amount of commander experience to both primary and secondary commanders, as well as 3 or 4 items. One of the items will always be a set amount of 1,000 Food, 1,000 Wood, 750 Stone, 500 Gold or Lvl. 1 Resource Pack. Another of the items will always be a set amount of Tome of Knowledge, totaling the same amount of experience as the base experience received by the Commanders. The third items will always be a set amount of Universal Speedup (1m) or Training Speedup (5m). The fourth item, when given, may include a set amount of Arrow of Resistance, 10 Gems, Obsolete Starlight Sculpturex1 or Ordinary Starlight Sculpturex1.
Immediately after the city is founded, only level 1 barbarians are able to be attacked. Subsequent levels will be unlocked by winning a battle against the previous level barbarians. Aditionally, the barbarian level range that can be searched is limited to kingdom-wide values and no other barbarians will spawn on the map. When the kingdom is first opened, only barbarians level 1-6 will spawn on the map and higher level barbarians will be unlocked, kingdom-wide, incrementally over the subsequent days. When searching for barbarians using the map UI, barbarians level 11 and below will instantly spawn beside your city if they are not located in the immediate vicinity. Barbarians level 12 and above only spawn at specific intervals in random locations, sometimes requiring a long march to reach if the neighborhood around your city has been sufficiently cleared out.
Multiple armies, and later multiple commanders per army, can be sent to attack the same set of barbarians. Each commander that dealt a blow to the barbarian will receive the full EXP amount and each army will receive the full set of resources.
